Meet Scott Smith, MD
Dr. Scott Smith, MD, was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, before completing his middle and high school education in Atlanta, Georgia. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Oral Roberts University, graduating Summa Cum Laude, and received his M.D. degree in 1991 from the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Smith completed his Family Medicine residency in Greenwood, South Carolina, where he began his career as an Emergency Room physician. For the next 15 years, he served as the Medical Director of an Urgent Care Center in Greenwood before transitioning to family practice at Mount Pleasant Hospital Roper St. Francis and later as a hospice physician at Roper St. Francis Hospice Cottage.
Currently, Dr. Smith runs The Island Doctor on Isle of Palms, SC, where he and his wife Catherine, a Certified Medical Assistant, provide concierge medical care and aesthetic medicine. His extensive training includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from the Beck Institute in Philadelphia and Psychedelic Counseling from the Polaris Institute in San Francisco. Dr. Smith also volunteers at the MUSC Free Clinic, where he enjoys mentoring medical students.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Smith is a man of diverse interests and passions. He is a former long-distance runner, a computer gaming enthusiast, a movie nerd, and an avid fan of Monty Python sketches. He enjoys reading Douglas Adams novels, listening to stand-up comedy, sewing and quilting, shade gardening, and indulging in pizza, Chinese food, and cookie dough ice cream. Fascinated by the absurdity of life as described by Kierkegaard, he continually explores his beliefs in a higher power. Dr. Smith loves practicing medicine, embracing new technology, helping others, and sharing his knowledge and experiences with anyone willing to listen. Married for 37 years, he and Catherine have three grown sons and are eagerly anticipating the arrival of grandchildren.
